The Denver Broncos, led by Hall of Famer John Elway, defeat the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. At the age of 37, Elway finally won his first Super Bowl. The Broncos won the Super Bowl again the next year, in what would be Elway's final season.
St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire hits 70 home runs, breaking Roger Maris' 37 year old record of 61 home runs in a season. McGwire and Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa competed in a hard-fought home run race throughout the season, with Sammy Sosa finishing four home runs behind McGwire.
